Poetry and imagination

Read great poems as a road back to Scripture.

These works are not substitutes for the Bible. They are slow imaginative companions that dramatize sin, grace, judgment, longing, virtue, prayer, and hope so Scripture becomes more memorable and searchable in your own mind.

How to use it

Read slowly, then return to Scripture.

These works sharpen attention and memory. Start with one poem, one passage, and one question.

How to relate them to the Bible

  • Start with the Scripture passages named on each card.
  • Ask which biblical theme the author is intensifying.
  • Notice where imagination clarifies, distorts, or presses beyond the text.
  • Return to the Bible before adding another commentary or lecture.

Best reading order

  1. Herbert or Donne for daily prayer.
  2. Bunyan for the Christian life as a journey.
  3. Milton and Dante for cosmic scope.
  4. Spenser and Eliot after the biblical categories feel familiar.
  5. Faust later, as diagnosis of restless intellect and temptation.
